Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints of the body due to cartilage wearing down. (Cartilage is the substance that pads the ends of the bones and reduces friction during movement.) The joints that are affected most often in women are the hands, knees, ankles and feet. In men, they are the hips, spine, and wrist. The severity of the condition can range from mild to severe.
