With more than 70 million Americans living with some form of heart disease, the concern for maintaining a healthy heart is growing among older adults. To combat the number one killer in America, Preferred Care at Home is taking a light-hearted approach with a traveling event called Crafternoon.
Crafternoon is a Preferred Care at Home initiative that encourages seniors to make Valentine’s Day cards and enjoy a bowl of heart-healthy oatmeal. “The concept is simple. It’s all about caring for your heart, both physically and emotionally,” says Jody Guerrieri, RN, Co-Founder, Preferred Care at Home.
Crafternoon nourishes the heart by promoting a healthy diet, which research shows that by increasing your daily intake of fiber, you can decrease your risk of heart disease. We say “do something for your heart this month… eat oatmeal!” says Francesca Robinson, Event Coordinator. The event also encourages the soul by promoting love with an afternoon of crafts. Preferred Care at Home will bring supplies to make homemade cards, which participants can share in private moments, or share publicly online at www.preferhome.com.
“It’s important to recognize these critical awareness months, but taking action in a fun way can lessen the heaviness of the situation,” Guerrieri says.
